Spanish People on the Silver Screen: Nation and Region in the Cinema of the Second Republic

The article reflects on the presence and scope of the discourses of Spanish nationalism in the mass culture through the study of Spanish cinema produced during the years of the Second Republic. From a theoretical perspective based on the latest theoretical developments on nationalism, and particularly those concerning the role of culture, the article seeks to place the cinema in the heart of the study of Spanish nation-building process in the first decades of the twentieth century. The analytical axis will be the examination of the filmic construction of the regional imaginaries as a representation of Spain.
